Over time, the sailcloth loses its dimensional stability due to UV radiation, creases and flapping in the wind. It becomes softer and loses its profile. UV rays make the material brittle and the colour begins to fade after about two years. A heavily faded sail only has about 50 % of its original stability. 

The sail cut is continuously being improved so that new sails offer an optimised profile for better propulsion. As the sail sizes are unchanged, the new sails can also be used on older models without any problems.
